Welcome to Public Libraries Department


The Public Libraries Department was established in 1960 in the heart of the capital, Amman, to serve as a beacon of knowledge and culture. It is one of the departments within the culture wing of Greater Amman Municipality.
It is located near the Roman Amphitheatre and includes reading halls for adults and children, as well as specialized sections which makes it a unique cultural and historical attraction in the city.

The department has expanded to cover various areas of Amman to expand its reach to people within their neighborhoods and communities. With this vision in mind, (27) branches libraries and (5) IT stations have been established.

The library welcomes you from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except Fridays ,Saturdays and official holidays). The library delivers its services in a modern and diverse manner which include borrowing, reading, and cultural activities such as hosting lectures, book launches for authors, participating in exhibitions like the Amman International Book Fair and the Cairo International Book Fair, and organizing summer clubs for the local community.

The library is also committed to organizing annual initiatives such as “Read to Rise” / “Our Book, Our Civilization,” and activities for City Day, during which free books are distributed to the local community each year.

The library holds more than 400,000 items in its collection, featuring rich titles in both Arabic and English covering local and global topics which aligns with its vision of becoming a hub of knowledge and culture. The libraries have witnessed remarkable turnout from visitors and subscribers, reflecting their vital role in promoting culture and knowledge within the community.
